WHMIS Awareness Training

Basic WHMIS Awareness for Restaurants and Hospitality is a five module course which covers the background on WHMIS, symbols and product classifications, workplace labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). The materials are presented in a text format with an audio narration so that Trainees can read and listen for faster learning. The total running time of the materials is 42 minutes. Upon completion of each module there is a module test, and upon completion of all modules the Trainee has successfully completed the training. The trainee is then issued a certificate of completion indicating the date and time, their test score and the course name. This certificate includes a full size and wallet size format. Average completion time is 1.5 to 2 hours per person.

Individuals can sign up and pay by credit card at a rate of $19.99 plus GST. They receive an email with the login information and an Access Code (username and password), where they can view the materials, take the test and print their certificate. Select the "Individuals" link on the right side of the page to get started. Alternatively, companies can request an account set-up where they can manage multiple Employees, add new Employees, issue access codes, monitor, and manage each person?s training activities and history. There are volume discounts available, and by signing up through Safe Hospitality your company can save the set-up fee. Select the "Companies" link on the right side of the page to get started.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) was introduced as legislation in response to Employee?s and Employer?s rights to know about the materials used in the workplace and the safety and health hazards of these materials. Employers are required to ensure that their Employees know how to safely use the controlled products in the workplace. One of the first steps is to develop an understanding of the WHMIS system, the symbols used to identify classes of controlled products, how to read a label, and how to use a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Once an Employee has this basic understanding they will be able to understand the specific steps in a Safe Work Procedure on how to use the specific controlled products in the workplace. The Employer is required to provide a program of ongoing training and testing, and a regular review/observation of each Employee using the specific materials. This helps to ensure that each person is doing their part and working together to improve everyone's safety and health in the organization.
